TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH – Canton police early Friday arrested seven people on drug charges after receiving a tip that methamphetamine was being sold and used at the Motel 6.
Police received a 911 call about a man looking into the windows of adjoining rooms at the motel at approximately 2 a.m. today. After attempting to detain a man outside the room, officers chased the man into a hotel bathroom, where he attempted to flush a loaded syringe and suspected methamphetamine, police said. A large amount of suspected methamphetamine, along with Xanax, were seen in plain view of the officers, police said.
Arrested were Russell Lynn Turner, 36, Gilmer; Ian Joseph Daley, 25, of Mineola; Barbra Ann Pritchett, 29, of Mineola; Holly Renee Hortman, 42, of Mineola; Edward Robert Preston, 40, of Fruitvale; Kimberly Ann Herring, 21, of Canton; and Matthew John Prough, 25, of Canton. They all face two charges of manufacture and/or delivery of a controlled substance (meth and Xanax)
Additional weapons charges were filed against Herring (possession of a substance in a detention facility), Preston (possession of a firearm by a felon) and Prough (tampering with physical evidence and evading arrest on foot).
More charges against the seven are expected, said James Bradshaw, Canton police narcotics detective.
“Not only did we catch these individuals using and distributing methamphetamine, but we also got a gun off the street,” he said. “That’s one less firearm that can be traded for drugs or sold on the streets, which makes it all that better for us as officers. I thank God that we did not have a incident with Preston, who was also under the influence of methamphetamine at the time this went down and our guys were not hurt.”
