BULLHEAD CITY — A Bullhead City man was arrested Sunday evening after allegedly assaulting his pregnant live-in ex-girlfriend, then fleeing the scene.
Bullhead City Police arrested Scott Mercer, 50, at about 7 p.m. Sunday after he reportedly got in a fight with his girlfriend at her home in the 2300 block of Castle Rock Circle.
According to police reports, Mercer had arrived at the home Sunday evening and shortly thereafter began an argument with his girlfriend that eventually escalated into violence.
“A witness (said he saw) Mercer asaulting (the girlfriend), who was observed to be screaming for help and police assistance,” said Sgt. Paul Holstine of the Bullhead City Police Department. “She ran to a neighbor’s residence, he pursued, then eventually got into a vehicle and left the area.”
Holstine said Mercer had been living with the girlfriend for a time after being informed of his pending eviction from his own residence in the 400 block of Harbor Drive. However, he had also apparently taken out an order of protection against the girlfriend that was still valid at the time of his arrest, putting him in violation of the order.
“It looks like the order is nearly a year old and nearly ready to expire,” Holstine said. “It came out, according to our records, in May of last year.”
Holstine added that Mercer and the girlfriend reportedly had not come to a consensus on the parentage of her as-yet-unborn child.
“According to her, she is 10 weeks pregnant with his child, and according to him, she’s pregnant with a child that may be his,” he said.
After a brief search, police found Mercer walking around in the vicinity of the Harbor Drive address, where they took him into custody.
A search uncovered a small amount of methamphetamine and a glass pipe in Mercer’s possession.
According to police reports, Mercer claimed that he had attempted to leave the girlfriend’s residence shortly after the argument started, but the girlfriend prevented him from doing so by lying beneath his truck.
The girlfriend, reports indicate, claimed that Mercer had punched her in the face, knocking several teeth loose, and officers observed blood around her mouth and red marks along her neck while interviewing her.
Mercer was taken to the Mohave County Jail in Kingman and booked on charges of domestic violence per aggravated assault, domestic violence per disorderly conduct — fighting, domestic violence per facilitation of interfering with judicial proceedings (referring to the earlier cited order of protection), possession of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
