New Hartford, NY – State police investigating what they thought was a larceny in progress discovered a methamphetamine laboratory instead, troopers said.

Troopers stopped about 2:15 a.m Saturday at 302 Washington Drive, New Hartford, when they spotted what they thought was someone stealing something from a vehicle parked in the driveway, state police said in a news release.

During the investigation they discovered items related to methamphetamine production in the car and the house, troopers said.

Jeffrey J. Martin, 39, of the Washington Drive address, and Maria C. Oles, 26, of 12 Birchdale Crescent, New Hartford, both were charged with criminal possession of precursors of methamphetamine and third-degree unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamine, both felonies. They also were charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of methamphetamine manufacturing material and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, troopers said.

Both were arraigned in New Hartford town court and ordered held at the Oneida County Jail, Martin on $20,000 bail, Oles on $10,000 bail.

The investigation continues, troopers said.
