Border Patrol agents seized more than $500,000 worth of methamphetamine Tuesday at the Interstate 8 checkpoint near Winterhaven.

Agents discovered the drugs at about 7 a.m, after a canine team performed a cursory search and alerted to the engine compartment of a gold-colored Ford Focus.

Agents located more than 16 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a non-factory engine compartment.

The driver of the vehicle was a 55-year-old Mexican male with valid immigration documents, according to a news release.

Border Patrol placed the driver under arrest and turned him over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the vehicle and methamphetamine.
