It all started with a call to police about shoplifting at the Dollar General in Dunbar.

JEFFERSON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — Some apartments in Jefferson have been condemned after a meth lab was found inside one of the rooms.

It all started Sunday evening when Dunbar Police received a shoplifting call from a Family Dollar store.Dunbar Police later pulled over two suspects, Derrick Walker and Jennifer Chapman, in a car. Inside the car, police found meth making materials in a backpack, along with a hotel key.

Walker and Chapman were arrested on charges of shoplifting and operating, or attempting to operate, a meth lab.

Dunbar Police handed the case over to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies got a warrant to search a hotel room at the Rustic Motel that matched the key found in the suspect’s car in Dunbar. Sandy Kay Gladue was inside the room, along with materials to make meth.

Two 3-month-old boys, along with their mother, were living in a room next door. The mother of the boys tells WSAZ.com she smelled something and had reported it to management the day before.

Gladue was arrested and charged with operating a meth lab and exposing children to a meth lab.

About 10:30 a.m. Monday, deputies found another mobile meth lab behind the Rustic Motel. Later in the afternoon officials with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department condemned the main building of the Rustic Motel.

“We didn’t take this lightly,” says Kanawha County planning director David Armstrong. “The fact that we have children in some of these rooms, the best thing that we could do is get them out of here, and then make the property owner responsible and make sure all these rooms are tested for contamination.”

Eleven rooms will be condemned, including the office where the manager lives. Several rooms in another building will remain open. Deputies say management will have to work with people currently living in the rooms to find another place to stay. There is not currently a plan in place.

LaSalle Burnett was one of the residents displaced by the condemnation.

“This is just wrong. I mean, just get out, that’s the only they’re saying. Just get out. No help, no contact information to go somewhere, nothing,” Burnett says.

Jacob Shaffer had just moved to the motel with his family about six weeks ago.

Shaffer said he was upset by “the ignorance of some people, ruining it for other people who need a place to stay.”

Kanawha County Sheriff’s deputies are also looking for Terry Mull, whose name was listed on room information where the meth lab was found at the Rustic Motel.
