U.S. Border Patrol agents from Yuma Sector’s Blythe Station seized approximately 12.5 pounds of methamphetamine and nearly $15,000 in cash after conducting a traffic stop on a pickup Tuesday on Interstate 10.

The methamphetamine had an estimated street value of $194,000.

Agent Spence Tippets, of the Yuma Sector Public Affairs Office said agents patrolling I-10 near Blythe observed suspicious behavior by the driver of a black pickup and decided to follow him. Tippets said the driver and passenger, both U.S. citizens, consented to a vehicle search.

Tippets said that during the search, agents discovered 11 Tupperware-like containers filled with crystal methamphetamine that had been hidden among luggage in the cargo bed.

While Tippets could only speculate why drug smugglers use Tupperware-like containers, he said they were easily found and convenient to pack. He added that based on the brand used and the way the drugs are packaged, agents have a good idea which drug trafficking organization is involved.

The drugs, suspects and vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
