The U.S. Border Patrol busted a driver trying to smuggle nearly 15 pounds of methamphetamine, it announced Monday.

The estimated $476,800 worth of drugs was seized Saturday at the Indio station checkpoint at highways 78 and 86 near Salton Sea.

Border Patrol dogs alerted agents to a 2010 Ford pickup truck about 9 a.m.

During a more thorough search, agents found the drugs inside a hidden compartment in the center of the truck, Agent Jores D. Peters said.

The driver — identified only as a 32-year-old Mexican man with a valid visa — and the truck were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
