The Vermilion, Municipal Task Force recently make several arrests, after receiving information that local drug dealers were dealing methamphetamine. Agents were able to make contact with one suspected dealer utilizing an undercover operative. Upon speaking to the suspected dealer the operative was able to negotiate the sale of crystal methamphetamine to the undercover agent. A place of meeting was agreed upon. The dealer, Rusty Hargrave of Kaplan, showed up and began negotiations with the operative. Once Hargrave produced the meth, agents moved in and made the arrest. Hargrave was transported to the VPCC where he was booked on charges of distribution of Methamphetamine, and Transactions involving drug proceeds. No bond has been set at this time.

In other action the Task Force has joined forces with the warrants division of the Sheriff’s Office in attempts to execute arrest warrants on offenders who are behind on child support. Sheriff Couvillon states, “After looking through several of these warrants, we noticed that many of the offenders have either active drug warrants, warrants for failure to appear on drug charges, or are known drug offenders. So by working in conjunction with one another it benefits both divisions.”

This was evident on the first arrest made by the two entities. Agents traveled to Pecan Island in search of Shawn Harris (dob 8-2-80) of Kaplan. Harris was wanted for four counts of Failure to appear for court, (charges which included illicit drugs), and two counts of non support. Agent’s located Harris traveling in a vehicle, at which time a traffic stop was made. Upon serving the warrants agents located suspected marijuana on Harris’ person along with a 9mm Luger Handgun which was found next to where Harris was sitting in the vehicle. Agents took this time to further the investigation by obtaining permission to search the residence. Upon searching agents located a suspected marijuana plant growing in a shed.

Harris was booked and charged with four counts of Failure to appear, two counts of non support, possession of marijuana, cultivation of marijuana, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile.
