U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents confiscated more than $90,000 in methamphetamine while manning a checkpoint at Highway 86 between Westmorland and Salton City, officials announced this afternoon.

The seizure was made by El Centro sector officers working at the Indio station, according to a news release.

A 42-year-old American man, along with the narcotics and the vehicle he’d been driving were turned over to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

The incident occurred at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday after a border patrol canine alerted officers while checking a 2001 Toyota Camry.

The vehicle underwent further inspection and agents discovered one package of methamphetamine inside a fire extinguisher in the trunk of the car.

The three-pound package of meth has a street value of more than $90,000, authorities said, adding that any suspicious activity should be reported to the Boarder Community Threat Hotline, (800) 901-2003.
