LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Lufkin Police officers arrested a 23-year-old woman Monday on a felony child endangerment charge after her two 9-month-old infants were allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine.
Amber Cherie Whitworth, 23, of Lufkin, was released from the Angelina County Jail Monday after she posted bail on a felony charge of abandoning or endangering a child/ criminal negligence. Her bond was $20,000.
The charge stems from a Sept. 1 incident in which Angelina County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance call at 788 Johnny Grimes Road. When they arrived on the scene, deputies spoke to Whitworth, who was holding her infant child and “appeared to be intoxicated and upset,” according to the arrest affidavit issued by the Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace office.
Whitworth told the ACSO deputies that she and her boyfriend, Rickey Shane Boykin, 41, also of Lufkin, got into an argument that got physical. Boykin allegedly threw a chemical substance on her body during the altercation, and the affidavit stated that the deputies could smell a strong “chemical odor” in the residence, on Whitworth, and on her child.
Child Protective Services was notified, and the children were taken from Whitworth, given medical treatment, and placed with a grandparent, according to the arrest affidavit. Boykin and Whitworth were arrested at the scene and charged with possession/transport of a chemical with the intent to manufacture.
While Whitworth no longer has a the possession charge, Boykin is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on felony charges of possession/transport of chemical with the intent to manufacture and child endangerment. Collectively, his bond has been set at $75,000.
CPS case worker ordered a hair drug test done on Whitworth and the two babies. All three tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.
The arrest affidavit stated that Whitworth and Boykin “intentionally, knowingly, and recklessly placed two 9-month-old children in imminent danger of death, bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment.”
