The elite Special Operations Unit of the Columbus Police Department arrested a Mableton, Ga., man Thursday and charged him with trafficking in methamphetamine.
Agustine Ortega, 37, was arrested about 9 a.m. at a hotel on Macon Road.
He is being held without bond in the Muscogee County Jail.
Police Capt. Gil Slouchick, supervisor of the unit, said the arrest puts a dent in the methamphetamine trade in Columbus.
The drug had a street value of $43,230.
“We arrested him and found him in possession of a pound of methamphetamine,” Slouchick said. “This was ice, high-quality methamphetamine.”
Police aren’t sure where the drugs were headed but an investigation is continuing.
“We are trying to get to the bottom of those answers,” he said.
Police don’t know if others may have been involved with the suspect.
“Certainly getting that much methamphetamine off the street is significant, we feel,” Slouchick said. “It just kind of like tells you what we got going.”
The Special Operations Unit was assisted by the Metro Narcotics Task Force, the Georgia State Patrol and Drug Enforcement Administration.
