JACKSON, MI – Convicted racketeer and former fugitive Ricky Wheeldon has been charged with five additional felonies in Ingham County District Court.

Wheeldon, who has previously done significant prison time, is accused of three drug possession crimes, including possession of methamphetamine, using a firearm to commit a felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was arraigned Tuesday, according to District Court records.

Already charged in Jackson County with absconding on a bond and using a firearm to commit a felony.  Wheeldon now has seven pending charges in two counties.

These are in addition to the nine felonies of which he already has been convicted in Jackson County.

A jury in May convicted Wheeldon of conducting a criminal enterprise, firearm and drug offenses and other theft crimes.

He was accused of profiting from the acquisition of hoards of stolen property, including weapons, motorcycles, construction tools and other items.

Jackson County Circuit Judge Thomas Wilson is to sentence him on these charges on Nov. 29, and it is expected he will have to serve a long prison sentence. Any new sentences could be consecutive to that time, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer said last month.

In the seventh day of the trial last spring, Wheeldon, free on a $500,000 bond, failed to return from a lunch break.

He evaded authorities for five months, even attracting the attention of reality TV star and bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman, before Michigan State Police troopers located and captured him on Oct. 24.

Troopers stopped a vehicle on Churchill Road near Bellevue Road in the Leslie area. Wheeldon was a passenger.

He had a gun in a holster on his waistband, Jackson County Assistant Prosecutor Jared Hopkins earlier said. It was a loaded .38-caliber handgun, state police said in October.

There were drugs in the vehicle, authorities reported.

The vehicle was driven by Wheeldon’s friend, Duane Leo Baumer, who also is facing charges in Ingham County.

Ingham County authorities took Wheeldon to the more northern county for his arraignment Tuesday, but he remains in the Jackson County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
