SAN ANGELO, Texas —A couple with a 2-month-old child was cited in a downtown supermarket after a police officer who suspected them of shoplifting found stolen goods in a diaper bag, and methamphetamine and a gun, a San Angelo Police Department news release said.

A police officer pulled aside Steve Zuniga, 24, and Jasmin Torres, 26, both of San Angelo, at about 7 p.m. Sunday at Lowe’s Marketplace, 2 S. Main Street, on suspicion of shoplifting, the release said.

“During a probable cause search of Zuniga, Officer Gesch located a handgun, drug paraphernalia, and a substance that later field tested positive for methamphetamine. The stolen items were recovered from a diaper bag and released to a store employee,” the release stated.

Police cited Zuniga for Class C theft and arrested him on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, manufacture and delivery of methamphetamine between 4 and 200 grams, and unlawful carry of a weapon on a licensed premise.

The drug charge is a first-degree felony, SAPD spokeswoman Tracy Gonzalez said. A first-degree felony is punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Tom Green County records show Zuniga was booked into jail around 10 p.m. with bail totaling $1,000. He hadn’t been released as of Monday afternoon, records showed.

Police cited Torres for Class C theft. She and the baby were released to Child Protective Services, the release states.
