Two 24-year-old men were arrested around 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at 160 East McConnel Avenue, McConnelsville, and are awaiting charges for operating a suspected methamphetamine lab at that residence.

Chief Troy Copeland of the McConnelsville Police Department reported that Nathan Ray Owens of Parkersburg, WV, and Tyler James Smith of McConnelsville are currently housed in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail in Nelsonville awaiting charges.

Smith was living at the home which is being rented by his mother, Amy Russell. She was not arrested.

Chief Copeland said officers from the McConnelsville Police Department and Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, along with agents from the Washington County Drug Task Force and the Adult Parole Authority, went to the location. After an extensive search, they found the location was being used to manufacture methamphetamine, according to Chief Copeland.

Due to the toxic nature of the materials used in the manufacturing process, agents from the Washington County Drug Task Force, using specialized hazardous material equipment, neutralized the area of all toxic substances, and the M-M Fire Department was on the scene in case the materials ignited.

Chief Copeland said that methamphetamine was found, and numerous materials for its manufacture were seized. The officers also confiscated scales and syringes, along with two firearms (pistols). One of the pistols had been stolen in Washington County.

According to the McConnelsville Police Department, the methamphetamine manufacturing components will be used as evidence in the case, which remains under investigation.

The Morgan County Grand Jury will meet on Friday, Jan. 4, and indictments are expected to be brought back against the two men at that time.

Chief Copeland and the McConnelsville Police Department said they appreciate everyone who assisted in the investigation.

Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant drug that is similar in structure to amphetamine. Due to its high potential for abuse, methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II drug and is available only through a prescription that cannot be refilled, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse website. Although methamphetamine can be prescribed by a doctor, its medical uses are limited, and the doses that are prescribed are much lower than those typically abused. Most of the methamphetamine abused in this country comes from foreign or domestic superlabs, although it can also be made in small, illegal laboratories, where its production endangers the people in the labs, neighbors, and the environment.

Taking even small amounts of methamphetamine can result in many of the same physical effects as those of other stimulants, such as cocaine or amphetamines, including increased wakefulness, increased physical activity, decreased appetite, increased respiration, rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, and hyperthermia.

Long-term methamphetamine abuse has many negative health consequences, including extreme weight loss, severe dental problems (“meth mouth”), anxiety, confusion, insomnia, mood disturbances, and violent behavior, the NIDA says. Chronic methamphetamine abusers can also display a number of psychotic features, including paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations, and delusions (for example, the sensation of insects crawling under the skin).

Transmission of HIV and hepatitis B and C can be consequences of methamphetamine abuse. The intoxicating effects of methamphetamine, regardless of how it is taken, can also alter judgment and inhibition and can lead people to engage in unsafe behaviors, including risky sexual behavior. Among abusers who inject the drug, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases can be spread through contaminated needles, syringes, and other injection equipment that is used by more than one person.

Currently, the most effective treatments for methamphetamine addiction are comprehensive cognitive-behavioral interventions. There are no medications at this time approved to treat methamphetamine addiction; however, this is an active area of research for NIDA.

      • Sarah, you truly need to learn how to not add your nonsense to things regarding this bust with your brother, and Nate. Because, apparently, you’re just not sharp enough to realize that your part in that bust is well documented in their “motion of discovery.” ( As i’m sure you’re already confused, just take a second, and google search what a”motion of discovery,” is…..) After educating yourself on what that means, take a second, and reflect on how ignorant and pathetic you STAY looking because you out here preaching about this fucking situation, but YOU HELPED CAUSE IT. Honey, not only do I have the papers, I have your statements, your Mother’s statements AND that douche bag ex boyfriend of yours’ statement, too. Did you know that the conversation you and your ex had about that shit was recorded? Did you know that as Americans, they have the RIGHT to ANY and ALL evidence? The recorded statements and written shit, it’s all there??? Fact is, you got your feelings hurt for doing grown woman shit, when you wasn’t grown. YOU called the cops, with that boyfriend – you lied about your mother being in danger, you helped put your brother behind bars – Oh, and don’t start with Tyler to me, about that being your brother, because ive been in communication with Tyler for MONTHS about all of this, so pump your brakes little girl, because I won’t hesitate for a fuckin’ second to make an entire fucking webpage, dedicated to what ya’ll fuckin’ did – I am college educated, and resourceful as hell ( if you’re unsure of what that means, google that, too!! ) Don’t push me. You can sit here and talk all that shit you want, and pull your little Tiffany Tough Tits act on the internet, – you can do that, but I wouldn’t, because if you are dumb enough to do that? Then every single person who sees this will be able to reach me at the email that I leave in this comment, and they can privately email me, and i’ll be more than happy to send scanned pictures, and compressed audio files of your disturbing, disgusting AWFUL handy work behind your own brother being in jail, and my man losing years of his life, too.

So, anyone who is interested in these papers, feel FREEEEEE to contact “MrsNateOwens@gmail.com”….

Oh, this is Nate’s Other Half, my name is Courtney, and considering the straight up HELL my life is right now BECAUSE OF YOUR DECISION A FEW YEARS BACK to run taddle to the cops because you were just a grudge fuck???? You’re lucky I haven’t blasted this shit all over the internet, already. To all your friends, everyone on Tyler’s site, Nate’s too. It sick that any person would have a hand in putting their own blood behind bars, and then sit around gettin’ high while their being processed…. So, HEAR ME DARLIN’, Sooner than you think Ohio will be gettin’ their turn at Nate, and you better have your poop in a group, because the other recordings that people have attained of you the last two years, plus every letter and written admission of lying to the cops, and being in love with Nate? I’ve got all that, too. Back the fuck off.
