NEWARK VALLEY — A methamphetamine lab bust Tuesday in Tioga County has led to criminal charges against six.
The New York State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team, Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, Owego Police Department, Vestal Police Department and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials executed a search warrant at 5 p.m. at 704 Shirley Rd., where law enforcement believed there was a methamphetamine production facility.
Authorities found approximately 7 ounces of liquid methamphetamine, 5 grams of processed methamphetamine, hypodermic needles and numerous items associated with the manufacturing of methamphetamine as well as a .410 gauge shotgun, according to police.
Those charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, include: Scott A. Cole, 23, of Shirley Road, Newark Valley; Jamie Swackhammer, 29, of Shirley Road, Newark Valley; Bryan Burkard, 31, of Wilson Creed Road, Berkshire; Theresa Cochran, 48, of Buffalo Road, Caroline; Kara Smithgall, 23, of Campville Road, Owego; and Melanie Short, 28, of Back West Creek Road, Berkshire. Further charges are pending.
During the execution of the warrant, Cole attempted to flee to a wooded area behind his residence, but was located shortly thereafter by New York State Police Aviation and K-9 units, police said.
All six people were arraigned in the Town of Newark Valley Court and sent to the Tioga County jail without bail.
The investigation is continuing, police said.
