A Topeka woman faces federal charges after police watched her pick up a 7-pound package of methamphetamine at a post office, authorities said Thursday.

Maria DeSocorro Martinez, 41, is charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, prosecutors said in a news release.

The charges stem from an incident March 18,when an agent’s affidavit said the Topeka police narcotics squad had Martinez under surveillance. The affidavit said police saw her pick up the package at the post office at 2921 S.E. Adams.

Martinez, the release said, didn’t know investigators had learned the package contained drugs and had obtained a search warrant.

If convicted, she faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10 million.
