EL PASO  — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers working at the El Paso port of entry seized 19.45 pounds of liquid methamphetamine Thursday night. An El Paso man was arrested in the case and is currently detained without bond at the El Paso County jail.
“CBP officers are doing good work stopping all forms of illegal drugs,” said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso Port Director. “The smuggling threat is high and CBP officers remain vigilant.”

The seizure was made just before 4 p.m. when a 1999 Dodge Durango arrived at the Ysleta international crossing from Mexico. A CBP officer selected the vehicle for a secondary exam. CBP officers searched the vehicle and detected anomalies within the seats. A CBP drug sniffing dog searched the car and alerted to the seats. CBP officers scanned the vehicle with a Z-Portal x-ray system and spotted several discrepancies in the appearance of the seats. CBP officers continued their exam and located eight liquid-filled bottles within the seats. The contents of the bottles tested positive for methamphetamine.
CBP officers arrested the driver, 23-year-old Juan Manuel Mancilla Martinez of El Paso, Texas. He turned over to and arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement HSI agents in connection with the failed smuggling attempt.
While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.
