Otay Mesa, Calif. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Otay Mesa port of entry yesterday discovered almost 43 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in the spare tire of a vehicle.

Nearly 43 pounds of methamphetamine is discovered and seized by CBP officers at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry

On Wednesday afternoon, April 10, at about 10 a.m., a CBP officer and detector dog were screening vehicles waiting in line for inspection, when the canine alerted to a 2012 Nissan Frontier. The truck was driven by a 56-year-old male Mexican citizen and resident of Moreno Valley, Calif. The driver and vehicle were escorted out of line for a more in-depth examination.

CBP officers ran the truck through the port’s imaging system which revealed anomalies within the spare tire. CBP officers subsequently extracted 18 wrapped packages of methamphetamine from the spare tire, with a street value of about $860,000.

The driver was arrested and transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center to await arraignment in federal court for the alleged smuggling attempt. CBP seized the vehicle and narcotics.
