A Norfolk man was arrested for possessing methamphetamine after police allege he littered on the street.

Derek McGillivray, 18, of Norfolk was arrested after an officer witnessed him throwing a lit cigarette into the street as he was walking in the 1200 block of West Pasewalk Avenue at 11:18 p.m. Tuesday, said Capt. Michael Bauer of the Norfolk Police Division.

When the officer spoke with McGillivray, he observed bloodshot, watery eyes and slowed speech. The officer questioned him about alcohol and drug usage, Bauer said.

During a search of McGillivray, the officer located a small plastic bag in his right coin pocket, Bauer said. The bag contained a white crystallized substance which tested positive for methamphetamine.

McGillivray will face a potential charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was booked into the Norfolk jail and later transferred to the Madison County jail.
