TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – In the past two months a Terre Haute man has been arrested by the same Indiana State Police Trooper, both cases involving a short pursuit.

During a routine patrol Tuesday night, an Indiana State Police Trooper found a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a Terre Haute motel.

Just after 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, a stolen red 1989 Cadillac was seen in the parking lot of a motel located at Highway US 41 and Margaret Avenue. The ISP Trooper stopped the vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot.

Randal Utterback, 57 of Terre Haute, was found to not have a valid driver’s license, he did not have a vehicle registration or ownership paperwork and there was also an open alcoholic container in the vehicle. When the Trooper asked Utterback to get out of the vehicle he refused and drove away trying the leave the parking lot. The Cadillac got stuck in a snowdrift and Utterback fled on foot towards Interstate 70.

After a brief pursuit, Utterback was caught in a wooded tree line near the north side of I-70.

During their investigation, it was found Utterback had $3,215 on him and documents possibly related to illegal activity. Utterback was arrested and taken to the Vigo County Jail on possible charges of habitual traffic violator, resisting law enforcement – use of a vehicle and theft.

Back on Jan. 21 just after 3 p.m., the same ISP Trooper along with another were investigating an outdoor altercation at 2315 South Center Street in Terre Haute. The two Troopers saw a male, who was later identified as Utterback, run from the yard and discard a black bag. After a short pursuit, Troopers were able to get both Utterback and the black bag.

Utterback had $4,388 in cash, approximately 4.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 7.5 grams of suspected marijuana, a syringe and other drug paraphernalia.

At that time Utterback was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of syringe, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and resisting law enforcement.

  1. Doc says:

    That’s karma for you.

And who would ever think that the state police would ever spot a stolen RED 1989 CADILLAC?????

  2. Jill says:

Is this not the Randall Utterback from the “Unsolved Mysteries” tv show?? That is wanted for repeatedly stalking, holding that girl hostage, etc.?? It surely is! I’d hate to think they haven’t put 2 and 2 together on this and arrested him for all that by now because they were looking for him for years!
