Comments Off on Border Patrol Seizes Some $135K in Drugs (4.8 Pounds of Methamphetamine) Carried on Ultralight Plane South of Imperial Beach

A joint effort among Border Patrol agents from ground, air and sea resulted in the seizure this week of more than 150 pounds of drugs — methamphetamine and marijuana — delivered on an ultralight plane that entered the country illegally, officials said Thursday.

The operation began about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, when agents with the Boulevard Station — south of Imperial Beach — spotted an ultralight plane fly over from Mexico, near Jacumba, officials said.

The San Diego agents informed the El Centro station of the incident, prompting agents from the Office of Air and Marine Air Interdiction to action, according to Border Patrol Agent Eduardo Jacobo.

The OAM Air Interdiction agents and U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Enforcement agents used both a plane and a helicopter to track the ultra-light in airspace, Jacobo said.

The OAM enforcement crews informed Indio Border Patrol agents that the ULA executed an air drop of possible narcotics and observed the aircraft landing near the area next to a vehicle, Jacobo said.

The OAM enforcement crews guided U.S. Border Patrol agents to the scene near 78th Avenue and Filmore Street, in Thermal, where agents were able to recover the ULA.

Indio agents continued to search the area with support from the OAM air crews and were able to recover the drop cage with narcotic bundles, about 200 yards from the aircraft.

Border Patrol Agents determined that the bundles contained marijuana weighing a total of 145.7 pounds and also contained 4.8 pounds of methamphetamine, Jacobo said.

The marijuana has an estimated street value of $87,420. The methamphetamine has an estimated street value of $48,000.

The marijuana was seized and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Jacobo said.

This is the third ultralight seizure by El Centro Sector Border Patrol this year, he added.

Last fiscal year El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents seized more than 5,700 pounds of marijuana and 445 pounds of methamphetamine, Jacobo said.
