Comments Off on China records big rise in number of addicts taking Methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs

China’s government says the nation has about 14 million drug addicts and there has been a rapid rise in the numbers using narcotics such as methamphetamine and ecstasy.

There were 2.95 million registered drug users at the end of 2014, but the China National Narcotics Control Commission estimated the genuine numbers of addicts was more than 14 million, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.drugs_guangdong_reuters

The number of registered addicts using “synthetic” drugs such as methamphetamine and ecstasy reached 1.45 million last year, an average annual rise in recent years of 36 per cent, according to the report.

The narcotics commission said it was the first time the number of addicts using these newer forms of drugs had exceeded those taking heroin.

Liu Yuejin, a senior official at the commission, said young people in particular were taking synthetic narcotics.

Police arrested more than 880,000 drug users last year in China and 264,000 people were sent to compulsory detoxification programs. Another 197,000 received community drug rehabilitation.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said in a report last May that there had been a huge global expansion in the sale of synthetic drugs.

In a separate statement, the narcotics commission announced on Friday that eight foreigners were detained by police in Beijing last month after receiving public tip-offs about drug abuse involving foreign nationals at an international school.

Police arrested two suspects from the United States and another two from New Zealand on April 17.

They were allegedly caught smoking marijuana in residential community in the Chaoyang district of the city.

The next day another American was detained, allegedly with four grams of marijuana.

Two foreigners from Sierra Leone and Mali were also arrested with 31.7 grams of methamphetamine and 1.9 grams of heroin.

The suspects were accused of drug taking, drug trafficking, illegal possession of drugs and providing a venue for other drug users.

Police said all had confessed, Xinhua reported.
