Comments Off on Four Taiwanese sentenced to death in Indonesia for Methamphetamine possession

Jakarta, Aug. 30 (CNA) An Indonesian court has sentenced four Taiwanese nationals to death for possession of 26 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

The four were among five suspects who were given the death sentence on Aug. 24 by a district court north of Jakarta.201608300027t0001

Although they have the right to appeal the sentence, there is little chance that it will be commuted, given Indonesia’s judicial record, analysts in Indonesia said.

The four Taiwanese, identified as Lee, age 40; Wu, 21; Hung, 25; and Shih, 35, were arrested last November after they were caught with 26 kg of crystal meth.

It was second such case this year, following the conviction in January of three Taiwanese who were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court for attempting to smuggle 2 kg of methamphetamine into the country in 2014.

The three, identified only as Chen, Wang and Lo, have filed an extraordinary appeal.

In April this year, another Taiwanese was arrested in Jakarta after he was allegedly found in possession of 12 kg of methamphetamine.
